Gelato and ice cream: two different stories

Ice cream is Made in USA, gelato is Made in Italy

In the US, the production of industrial ice cream is traced back to 1851, when Jacob Fussel jr from Baltimore founded the first factory in 180, Exeter Street. It is said that Fussel was a milk and cream trader and that he had registered, during a very hot summer, a huge surplus of products. Inspired by the street vendors who were selling gelato on the streets of Baltimora, Fussel decided to use his surplus to produce “gelato”. That is how industrial ice cream was born. The choice of the merchant from Baltimora decided the fate of street vendors and of those who produced artisanal gelato: they had to make way for the industry because the prices of Fussel’s ice cream were impossible to practice, for small artisans.
